Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

Swimsuit season has hit us full force, ladies. Instead of showing you the hottest trends in swimwear, I thought I'd share the history of the classic bikini style swimsuit.

Ava Gardner

Although, the bikini style has been around for centuries, the original bikini bathing suit shocked people when it first came out in the late 1940s. It was believed to be risque because it was worn by pin up girls and innappropriate women. It was created by a frenchman named Louis RĂ©ard who wanted to cause an uproar just like the atomic bomb site it was named after; Bikini Atoll. Two-piece bathing suits in the past had not exposed the navel and used much more fabric. France accepted the new trend right away, but other countries were much more resistant to the idea.

Over the years, the bikini has become more acceptable, as well as much smaller. There are many variations of how much coverage you want, including the thong style bottom. Even topless is sometimes considered to be apart of the bikini family. These styles are not going to be found at a family pool party, but many have dared to wear these in public. Most women like to stick to the full coverage bikinis that cover just enough to keep momma happy.

Bikinis have become the norm for girls and women from a young age up until their adult years. There is a full Sports Illustrated issue dedicated to them, there are songs written about them, and there are thousands worn down the runways across the world. There is no better way than kicking off summer than to find the right bikini for you. Happy tanning!

One for One

In 2006, a man named Blake Mycoskie was visiting Argentina when he befriended many of the children living there. He saw the struggles they had to go through everyday including not owning any shoes. This was when he came up with the concept of TOMS shoes. For every pair of TOMS that you purchase, his company will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. Later that same year, Blake and a group of his friends, family, and new staff members returned to Argentina where they handed out 10,000 pairs of shoes. It has only grown since then.

Many of these children have never owned a pair of shoes which could lead to soil-transmitted diseases, infected wounds, and not being able to attend school. This can all be prevented because of this great cause! I just purchased my very first pair and I am so happy I did because I learned all about the company and what they do. I thought I would share it with everyone because every little contribution counts. And you can get some cute shoes out of it :)

There are so many colors, prints, and styles to choose from. They have even started an eyeglasses line. If you would like to learn more about TOMS you can visit their website here.

Save or Splurge?

Just like SJP stated, sometimes you have to spend a little more $$$ to lift your spirits. So what should you splurge on you ask? I've got the answers here!

Many of the staple items in your wardrobe, such as a blazer, the little black dress, and your nice jeans, should be your most expensive items. These classic pieces should be fitted and/or tailored to fit your body and you aren't going to find that on the sale racks. You want them to last longer, therefore it will be well worth it in the long run. Clothes are often more comfortable when you spend more money on them, so why not buy a cashmere sweater instead of the cheaper cotton cardigan. If you need a neutral item, you should most likely spend more on it so you do not have to replace it as much.

A Kate Spade bag would be a great purchase. Classic designs that will go with everything and last forever.

When you are wanting to get a new, fun outfit for the party this weekend, this is when you can go for a cheaper route. This includes printed sundresses, bold accessories, and the sparkly mini skirt that you have had your eye on. Since you aren't going to wear these items as often, why would you spend your hard earned cash on them?

These fun Mossimo wedges from Target are only $29.99!

When you are trying on the latest designer dress, stop and think for a minute. I always ask myself, "Am I going to die if I do not have this?" If I answer no, I take a last look and usually forget about it in the next hour. If you are smart about your spending, buyer's remorse won't even be in your vocabulary.

Trend To Try: NEON!

Pinned Image

Since we have all been cooped up in knitted scarves and peacoats, I know we all can't wait to whip out our favorite floral sundress. Only this season, floral has been moved to the back burner. Neon hit the ground running and I can't wait to see everyone's interpretation of this trend.

Lately, I have been all about pastels, but it is definitely time to turn up the color volume! It has hit the runways, and is even starting to trickle out into the streets. There is a definite 80s vibe going on and there is a possibility of tragic outfits in the future, but if done correctly, this trend is tre chic!

Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to turn a few heads. Wear your neon with confidence and I promise people will be envious that they didn't wear it first.

The P.O.C.

The P.O.C.

Are you having fashionista's block as much as I am this winter? No more worries. Take those boring outfits and spruce them up with a "Pop of Color!" This trend is super diverse because you can do ANYTHING! I used a red lipstick, a bejewelled belt, and strappy heels as an example, but the possibilities are endless. Accessories are a great P.O.C. but you can throw on a bright blazer over any neutral color and you've got yourself a show stopping number!

Wave the Magic Wand to the Perfect Fitting Jean!

Jeans... They are a staple in every woman's wardrobe.

Jeans have never been more accessible, yet, harder than ever to know which one is for your individual body type.

Below are the different cuts/styles/fits of today's fashions and "must-haves"
in every woman's wardrobe.
But first... A little jean education!

It takes many pairs of jeans in a fitting room to find the right one and knowing this ahead of time can lower the frustration level.

Finding the right store is also proven to be a challenge along with the fit. Take your age into consideration, your own personal style and find a store that caters to that first. Then branch out of your comfort zone!

You must know what your best and worst attributes are before trying on! Otherwise, again you will be discourage from the very beginning.

I recommend going somewhere that has knowledgeable Stylists that can suggest the right fit/cut the first time. If you walk into a store that can't do this for you, you are waisting your time. They must know how each jean fits and should be able to describe in detail the way the jean will fit on each body type. I know first hand that Talbots has revamped their jeans over the last couple years. I am not saying that they will fit every person that walks through the door, however, I am hard to fit myself and I easily put on their Curvy (and went down a size) or Heritage Cut Jean. They are made for women with curves in those not so great areas. They also have a Signature, Modern, Trouser and Boyfriend Cut as well for different body types.

Remember, the jean is lower in the rise and most ( I should say few) will come to your navel, waist line or any where close to this. Don't fret! This is all a part of the ever changing fashion styles, but, this one is here to stay a while. I have heard many customers say, "they just don't make jeans for ladies over  50." This is not the case. If you want jeans to have a low rise, go to Buckle. If you want jeans to hide that baby bulge, find a store like Talbots that cater to the mid 30's - 50+ woman. I have had 3 kids and know all about the baby bulge, hips and thigh issues. The perfect jean is out there and its up to you to find the one most comfortable for you.

I have always worn the Boot Cut Jean because it balances wider hips and can be dressed up or down especially in a darker wash. Be careful of the lighter wash on the hips and thighs as this can emphasis these areas. You can create the illusion of curves on a more boyish figure with a Boot Cut Jean, which lends this cut to be the most versatile.

The Slim Cut Jean is my 2nd favorite jean. YES! Curvy girls can wear this jean if worn right and still have good proportions. This jean works well paired with a heal, boot or flat and is a closet staple for all occasions. They do make them with higher waists for those who need to hold or flatten a tummy. A flowy blouse or long cardigan balances the form fitting silhouette.

The Boyfriend Cut Jean has a new version this year. We are moving away from the slouchy look to a more narrow but still relaxed and comfy fit. Perfect for week ends, this jean allows for a more casual feel and look. It's really not his jean anymore! Pair it will an untucked sweater, casual hat and a big purse or tote and you have a casual week end look.

Trouser Jeans have proven their place in most work environments. This is a great look for the office and has become a favorite work pant for many. You can find this cut high waisted ( don't forget, it's not at the navel ) or at the hip. This is a great pant for your classic work to play blazer.
I saved the most "out of the box" jean for last. COLOR!!!! Every woman needs a little color and most are afraid to use it on the bottom half of their body. PINK, ROYAL, RED, PURPLE, WHITE are all the trend for Spring! Nobody wants to look like they shopped in the JR. department. To avoid this use a neutral shoe and shirt with a colored purse or clutch ( and...it doesn't have to be the same bright color). Step out and have some fun!!

Before you begin your search for the perfect jeans,
ask your self these questions:
  1. What is the function of the jean?
  2. What are my best and worst attributes?
  3. Or... What do I always have a hard time fitting? Hips, thighs, waist, length?
  4. How do I want them to fit?
  5. Who sells different types of jeans, styles, cuts, etc? Where will I find the best choices?
  6. How much do I want to spend (I didn't even touch on this, but jeans can vary in price. You will get what you pay for, unless you are paying just for the name. You should be able to find a jean for less than $100).
Last but certainly NOT least, and SO important...

    7.   Will there be someone there who is knowledgeable and will know how to fit me?

Good Luck and feel free to email me with any questions!

Bag It In Style!

Bag It In Style!
Push the "Green Easy Button"
Re-usable shopping bags!

I have seen more people utilizing these fashionable bags not only in grocery stores, but, in local shopping centers. Eliminate trash and un-necessary waste all while sporting a fashionable bag to house all your new purchases. Even some retailers are using these handy bags putting their logo on them. Their not just for your groceries any longer.

Just as you wash your re-usable clothes... you have to wash your re-usable bags! Research shows that 97% of us never wash them. A large number of bacteria finds its way in all these bags. Studies show that one laundry cycle reduces the bacteria by 99%. Wash in between grocery trips to prevent any contamination.

These bags can be found just about anywhere these days, from your favorite grocery store to your favorite local boutique or big box chains.

Let's Get Physical!

Happy 2012 Fashionistas! This is the time to make new years resolutions and to actually stick to them! It is no secret that the top priority on everyone's list is to lose those extra pounds. I would like to give ya'll some pointers so that you are inspired to do so.

First of all, you need to set a realistic goal for yourself. It is every girl's dream to look like a Victoria's Secret model, but that body type is not healthy for every woman. You can easily look up what the standard healthy weight is for your height and age. Before you begin this journey, you have to be willing to make changes in your daily eating and exercise habits. Once you are dedicated, get in that gym girl!

Maybe in my next life.

My own personal way to get myself off of the couch is to buy cute exercise clothes! I don't want my new yoga pants to take up space in my drawer do I? NO! I want to show them off while strutting on the treadmill. It might not be a drastic motivation, but it works for me :)

Sarah Palin likes to wear her "Norts" (Nike shorts) while exercising.

My last little input is to not give up. If you don't lose weight as fast as you want, just keep trying. It will definitely payoff in the end. You could go down a pant size or even fit into that dress you have always wanted to wear. Having more confidence in yourself could never hurt, and this is a healthier option too. So put your DVR on pause, and get your body movin!
